Vision Team Report to Aldersgate Administrative Council Meeting, March, 2007:

The following are the key points of the Vision Team.

  • Decisions and key points
    • We will keep the current vision and mission for Aldersgate--really confirmed decision from 2006
    • We will focus in two areas
      • Identify ways the Aldersgate Family can better meet our vision and mission
        • Get feedback from congregational members and groups on how the Aldersgate Family can better meet the vision and mission ( use attached form in committees, groups, Sunday school classes and members)
        • Each committee needs to provide feedback
        • Will capture and summarize the results and share with Ad Council/congregation
      •  Develop a way to enhance and encourage engagement of Aldersgate Family in life of the church
        • Will develop an approach similar to Ankeny UMC their "Every Member in Ministry"
          • Kaj Sinclair will lead
          • For Aldersgate could be "Every Member Connects"
          • Working with Ankeny UMC to leverage their ideas
          • Will leverage DMARC group that focuses on volunteers and getting engagement
    • Vision Team expectations
      • Will meet monthly through June---real focus on two areas.
      • Will report to Ad Council in June with recommendation for implementation of any changes for 2008
      • Will provide leadership/help in implementing any changes
      • Will then meet in August and November to monitor progress and dissolve at end of 2007.
    • Need short term input and engagement from creative members to get ideas, and help get and interpret feedback, particularly now through June

# Suggest that these be goals for the Vision Team for 2008 and identify a leader for each goal:
^ Follow-up on the pamphlets and ensure data and information is available for those who need it.   Jason & Vicky
Suggestion was made to post results and share broadly so members can see where there are needs and members interested in different areas
^ Ensure implementation of Every Aldersgate Member in Ministry for 2009 administrative structure Bill, Pastor Dave and Mary
Some discussion concerning if we should develop pamphlet to cover current committee structure and stay with current committees. This will need to be determined at next Vision Team Meeting and would need to go to Ad. Board for approval by June. Bill, Pastor Dave and Mary will discuss and have recommendation to Vision Team by next meeting.

Date                Treats                          Devotional
April 29           Vicky Rossander          Vicky Rossander
Aug. 25            Dave Shogren             Jeremy Poland
Nov. 10           Kaj Sinclair                 Ken Roth

  1. Aldersgate goals and brainstorming                                           Jeremy/Kaj
# Review Aldersgate goals and brainstorm on how we might better meet goals

Kaj and Jeremy led brainstorming session concerning how Aldersgate could better meet our goals for 2008 covering Worshipping God, Spiritual Growth and Serving in the Power of the Holy Spirit. Had a lot of discussion on how we can enhance our outreach and growth, bring more people to Christ and enhance our congregation’s Christian walk

Specific Recommendations needing action:
* Worship & Spiritual Growth are top priority without slipping in Service

* Leverage the power of prayer: Have a Prayer Vigil from end of Good Friday Service till Easter morning (7:30 am)—36 hour or through Saturday Service (22 hours). Vision Team recommends moving ahead this year and will support making it happen to enhance Worship and Spiritual Growth for congregation—will need help from Admin Board and committees to make it happen
            +Will discuss at Staff meeting
+Will leverage off of past experience
                        - Will have 1 hour shifts
                        - Can have more than one person but at least one
            - Suggest having at least one and preferably 2 people there
for security serving 2-3 hour shifts
+ Will need to push at worship in bulletin/newsletters and in Sunday school classes—Vision Team will help a lot here

* Celebrate key events that occur right after the event (e.g. Youth strike for Christ, ASP) and provide testimony opportunities

* Participate in Urbandale July 4th parade and have youth and members with Aldersgate T-shirts as well as drive the UMM P.E.T. vehicle

* Focus on spiritual basics in worships and small groups

* Provide more altar opportunities before or at close of service as well as during communion

* Additional spiritual growth opportunities, e.g. Disciple, study of Spiritual gifts, Walk to Emmaus (adult and youth version), Bible study

* Look for ways to enhance worship service---lot of discussions and various ideas. Important to identify ways to get people to come back more often. This would be through the type of message, methods of worship, etc.
+ Suggest that we invite those that attend Sunday school and not worship to attend worship service in a positive way, reverse would also be true—one/one contact
+Share why worship is a critical part of one’s spiritual life—personal testimony and why it is a priority
+ Suggest having an outside worship on some Saturday nights in the summer
+ Identify ways to bring those members back more often that attend only at Easter and Christmas

* How do we reach out to the community better and bring more diversity
into our congregation from people in the Aldersgate neighborhood that also includes Hispanic, Bosnian, etc.
+ Canvassing community with adult/youth and inviting people to
             come to Aldersgate
+ Identify something to do at Aldersgate specifically for
Neighborhood that would bring people to Aldersgate
+ Share what we are doing and make people aware of
opportunities for spiritual growth, worship and service
